Triumph Triple Challenge Round06:Brands Hatch Indy

The UK’s premier one make bike racing series returned to Brands Hatch in Kent on 19/20 July. This was the sixth meeting for the 2008 season, and like last year, it looks like going to the wire.

Double wins at Cadwell Park from Scott Rowbottom in the Michelin Young Guns and TDG Cup racer Rhalf Lo Turco,  saw both riders move up to third in the championship and see the top in sight.

With a hot weekend forecast, the pace was blistering from the off. With just 3 laps completed in the first qualifying session, Josh Wainwright had already broken last year’s 50.2 second lap record set by Steve Smith. This was watched closely by his brother James who rode the same bike to third in the championship the year before (doing a 50.4sec lap at the same circuit). By the end of qualifying, the on form Scott Rowbottom had secured pole position with Carey, Rothwell and Wainwright sharing the all Young Guns front row.

With less than a second separating the top fourteen qualifiers, Saturday’s Superpole race was going to be a scorcher, and it was Wigan’s Reece Rothwell who got the hole shot with Tim Venables hot on his tail from sixth place on the grid. The sprint race concluded with Rothwell taking the chequered flag and the first Triumph Triple Challenge bike to break a 50 second lap, and Rowbottom close behind.

Sundays forecast was even better, and with two races in the programme, the crowds were ready for a great day.  Race one saw Venables again get a fantastic start and lead into the blind drop that is Paddock Hill bend. Rowbottom had again fought hard and pushed into the lead on lap 3, only to crash out at Druids hairpin two laps later. With Josh Wainwright and Reece Rothwell also crashing out, it was TDG Cup rider, Mark Cheetham that had pushed hard from ninth place to set the fastest lap of the weekend and new lap record 49.89 and finished a close third just behind Lance Carey. Venables held onto the lead  and took top step on the podium for the first time in this year’s championship.

With all but Rothwell back on the grid for the final race of the weekend, as the lights went out, it was Rowbottom again at the front. With a dominating ride he lead from start to finish whilst other riders fought between themselves for the rest of the podium. Venables and Sim exchanged places several times for second place, and at the flag it was Michelin Young Gun Scott Rowbottom first, and Jack Sim just in front of Tim Venables for second and third.
